An explosion heard throughout the town of Houlton had people on alert early Tuesday. It happened around 9:00 o’clock in the morning at Steelstone Industries. Several people reported hearing a loud noise and seeing black smoke.
Manager of Sherwin-Williams Alfred Hanscom said, “Saw a lot of smoke today and a big boom. A lot of customers came running in they were kind of frightened, then I saw a lot of fire trucks and even an ambulance went by so I wasn’t quite sure what was going on.”
A 10,000 gallon asphalt tank at the hot top plant exploded and the ripple effect could be heard AND seen around town.
Manager of Sherwin-Williams Alfred Hanscom said, “It looked like something very serious, a lot of black smoke.”
Service Coordinator at Theriault Equipment Andrew Marciniak said, “I thought it was something that happened here, equipment falling or something like that, found out it wasn’t so wasn’t sure what it was until one of our customers came in later on and asked if we had heard that there had been an explosion at Steelstone.”
The Houlton and Hodgdon Fire Departments responded to the scene and put out the fire which had resulted from the explosion. Fortunately, no one was hurt in this incident. There’s no word yet on what caused the explosion, the incident is under investigation. News Source 8 contacted the Houlton Fire Department for a comment but the Fire chief was out of town today. We’ll report further information as we gather it.
