NMW meet the 1st Wednesday I of the month during the school year at Hodgdon High School in the blue shop building. Meeting times are 7:00pm but doors usually open at 6:30. A short business meeting is held and we then display our monthly project assignment and other things we have been working on. We discuss tips, tricks and everything woodturning. Often a member is asked to do a demonstration or tutorial on tool sharpening, wood species identification, cutting a log into a bowl blank etc. Summer meetings are held at various member shops and our September meeting is a family picnic and wood swap. In December we again have a family Christmas party and members make and Donatello charity wooden toys and other items for families in need during the holidays. Yearly membership dues are $25.00
The club purchased two lathes and tools, one being housed at the Hodgdon shop building. This gives interested students the opportunity under guidance and instruction to “learn to turn”. The other is our “loaner lathe”. We offer this to prospective members who are interested but hesitant to invest in the necessary equipment. This allows them to try it at home with mentoring and instruction and decide if this is an art form they want to pursue.
Our club also does demonstration and shows at various community events and our next is Houlton’s WINGS AND WHEELS-FLY IN/DRIVE IN at Houlton International Airport on July 26. We have participated in many events and received a “BEST OF SHOW” at the 2012 Southern Aroostook Trade Show, our first show! We always seem to draw a large crowd who have many questions and great interest in the art of woodturning. We all love to talk about our passion for creating beautiful items out of wood!
