A day after he rolled out the first of his policy initiatives, independent gubernatorial candidate Eliot Culter spoke to rotarians in Caribou about the major challenges our state faces and how he plans on tackling them. Cutler said when he wrote his book, A State of Opportunity, he had Aroostook in mind.

“Aroostook is a county that needs and deserves opportunity, and we can do it. You have extraordinary advantages in Aroostook – you have land, water, people communities, we can turn this county around,” he said.

The plan Cutler unveiled Tuesday in Portland focused on improving the state’s communication and roads, which he says will benefit us here in many ways.

“When we rebuild our roads its going to help Aroostook, its going to help Aroostook with agriculture, with getting goods to market with getting people to come to Aroostook, with getting more tourists coming to Maine and coming to Northern Maine. That’s what we’re going to do,” he said.

Other topics Cutler spoke about in Caribou were what he called the current partisan warfare in Augusta, job creation, and how we can keep young people in our state. Cutler says we can expect to see more policy roll outs soon, and so far the campaign is going well.

“We’re way ahead of where we were at this stage four years ago when I almost won – came that close..we’re way ahead of where Angus King was when he ran and got elected in ’94,” he said.

On Thursday Cutler will be in Presque Isle, Ashland, and Fort Kent, and he’s finishing his visit to the county with a stop in Madawaska on Friday.
