PORTLAND, Maine (AP) – State officials and experts on alternative heating sources are meeting in the Maine city of Portland.

Tradespeople and energy department officials from New England and New York are gathering at the Northeast Biomass Heating Expo from Wednesday to Friday.

The conference draws 1,450 people and 320 different businesses and organizations to discuss wood and other renewable fuel that can replace heating oil when used in emerging technology. Maine is the state with the highest heating oil usage in the nation.

Energy groups say federal and state funding is being used to help schools, universities, towns and residents replace oil furnaces with efficient wood boilers.

The conference is at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
