One of the longest running canoes races in the county will be held tomorrow in Houlton. The Mexuxnekeag Canoe race will start in New Limerick and will finish at the boat landing on Highland Avenue. The Houlton Chamber of Commerce stepped in last year to organize the race and make sure that it continued.
Torres:” This race has been going since the mid 70’s when the outdoor club at Ricker College started it. It has changed a little bit over the years. Rotary had it for a long time Dollars for Scholars had it for awhile. A couple of years ago people decided they didn’t want to run it anymore and they came to me and said hey would you run this race and I said sure we can’t let that one go by the wayside.”
There are 30 categories again this year and long time racer Peter Blood says they have added a new division to honor a long time racer
Blood:” Ken Wetmore who built homemade canoes for years and there will be some Ken Wetmore canoes in this race. We are going to have a Ken Wetmore category. It has to be a wooden canoe it has to be a handmade wooden canoe.”
Torres and Blood were scouting out the water levels this afternoon and they feel it should be a fast race. The first paddler will leave New Limerick at 10am and should finish sometime after 11.
Torres:” I think it is going to be a great race, The water level is up last year we didn’t have much water so it was a little less challenging. I think it is going to be a great race.
