A former University of Maine Fort Kent soccer player has signed a pro contract with Major League Soccer. Matt Dunn has signed with Chivas USA based in Los Angeles. UMFK Coach Bill Ashby says this is great news for Dunn and the University
Ashby:” It’s very exciting, anytime one of our Student Athletes have a chance to go to the next level we see that as a great opportunity for our University to promote us Nationwide. We are very happy for Matt and we are excited to see him play in Major League Soccer.”
Dunn who captained the US Under 17 National Team spent one year with the Bengals playing in 17 games posting 7 goals and 10 assists.
The Dallas native helped lead UMFK to the USCAA National Championship game. They lost a hard fought game to West Virginia Tech in the title game. Ashby says his Bengals teammates are very excited for his chance to play Professional soccer.
Ashby:” They are very excited they support him 100 percent. We would have liked to have kept him four years but it’s an opportunity you have to take when it is offered.”
Ashby says that Dunn told him that he would be continuing his education at UMFK
Ashby:” Matt knows that Professional sports come with an expiration date whenever it might be. Matt is committed to continue his education with UM Fort Kent in an on line format so at the end he will at least have a degree from UMFK.
The veteran coach says this is a great recruiting tool for the Bengals program
Ashby:” Nice recruiting tool it should get us more exposure with top level players and it shows top level players that you can reach Maor League Soccer ranks from U Maine Fort Kent.”
