Students from across the County attend the Francis Malcolm Institute in Easton for science field trips and programs each year. Over the past 10 years, the Science Center has been in need of financial assistance to meet it’s operational needs. And as our News Source 8’s Angela Christoforos reports; a recent donation has helped move the Easton Science Center closer to meeting it’s financial goals…

Fort Fairfield pre-schoolers got a chance to get their hands on marine life from coastal Maine. It’s part of a program at Easton’s Francis Malcolm Institute; a Science Learning Center that’s recently got a $50,000 donation.

Francis Malcolm Institute Planetarium Director Larry Berz said, “This wonderful and generous donation from Elizabeth Shaw on behalf of her brother George D. Todd is an important step and a milestone really in our opportunity to be conveying science.”

George D. Todd, just like these youngsters, showed an active interest in science. The donation on his behalf is a big help to the Science Center, especially since the original funds from the trust of Francis Malcolm have dwindled over the past 10 years.

“Many people have come believing that the Science Center already is sustainable and permanent, but that’s not the case,” said Berz.

The Science Center has undertaken a capital campaign with a goal of raising 1.5 million dollars by 2016. The recent donation has bumped the Center up to over 70 thousand dollars.

“We’ve had the ability to work with thousands of boys and girls, with the opportunity of having interactive engaging science, lessons, but more importantly science experiences,” said Berz.

Six thousand visitors come here each year to visit what’s been a gem in the County for the past 30 years. And the Director hopes that the recent donation will encourage matching gifts and donations from the community, so that the Institute can be a County Science Learning Center for years to come.

If you’d like to donate and help support the Francis Malcolm Institute, you can contact the Science Center at 207-488-5451, or you can send a donation to P.O. Box 186, Easton, ME 04740
