There’s a brand new fitness facility right here in the county! It’s called CrossFit Presque Isle at 605.¬†Forget the treadmills and the won’t see a stair master in this box..instead, you’ll find equipment like rings, row machines, and wall balls..all of which contribute to a workout that combines gymnastics with cardio with olympic style lifting.

Partner and CrossFit Level 1 Coach Katie Buob says, “You’re an athlete and you train like one so it’s not just, you show up to class and hammer out a 50 minute workout with a warm-up and cool down. We work on mobility, we work on strength, speed, power, it’s very all inclusive.”

The main machine is your body. This CrossFit box on Central Drive opened up just last week and it’s already got 60 members – this project was two years in the making..partner Scott Violette says he hopes it can be sort of a training ground for athletes who do other sports in the county – like cross country skiing and triathlons.

“We kinda hope that we’re the center of the fitness community here in PI so that we have all of our athletes not only train with us here but also go off and do some of those fun things that keep them active and keep them sane through these long winters,” said Violette.

Buob says though the workouts are high intensity. Each one is scalable, and anyone of any performance range can do them and see their body change. She says what truly sets CrossFit apart is the community component.

“When you’re done a workout, you’re cheering someone else on to get them through it – you’re encouraging them, you’re motivating them..we work with each other and we help each other out.”

She even gave me a chance to check out some of the equipment – pretty fun stuff! She says in less than two weeks, athletes are already seeing improvements with their form.

Lora Soucy of Presque Isle says, “my for myself, to get as fit as I was about ten years ago..I want to see if I can do that to my body its just a challenge for myself to see what I can do with it.”

Making the county healthier and stronger one squat at a time.
