The 2014 IBU Youth Junior World Biathlon Championships are expected to draw in a lot of people to the County, and preparations to accommodate all of the spectators are well underway at Nordic Heritage Center. News Source 8’s Angela Christoforos reports…
The Nordic Heritage Center parking lot is in the beginning phases of being transformed into a tent city!
2014 IBU Youth Junior World Biathlon Championships Event Manager Steve Towle said, “Just the construction phase of it will probably have upwards of 50 people that are working for 4 or 5 days to put all the pieces in place.”
It’s all in preparation for the upcoming 2014 IBU Youth Junior World Biathlon Championships.
Crew Leader Trevor Mcclelland said, “It is something that has its challenges whenever it comes to winter time because we have to deal with frozen grounds so anchoring stakes into the ground certainly takes longer than usual.”
The big items are two tents. One is 66 feet by 100 and the other is 50 feet by 66. The tents will accommodate spectators and volunteers. Nordic Heritage Center will be closed throughout construction but will re open in time for the first competitions.
“We are taking up quite a huge chunk of the parking lot here and especially whenever we are setting up we need space around the tents to do that,” said Mcclelland.
“We’re hoping that this will be set within 2 days, it gives us a couple of days to tweak the items and then unofficial training and training starts next week,” said Towle.
The first competition kicks off on Friday the 28th, and both people from near and far are getting excited.
Volunteer Abby Popenoe said, “We’re planning to come up and watch, cheer on we have some teammates racing so we’ll come support them and watch all the other teams.”
