A horse drawn buggy operated by four Amish children were struck by a vehicle In Island Falls earlier Monday afternoon. State Police received the call shortly after 2:30. 63-year old Stephen Porter of Sherman was driving his 2003 Volkswagen station wagon on Route 2. He was passing an Amish residence when 4 children, ages 9, 8, 7 and 5 were in the buggy moving wood from one location on the property to another. The kids didn’t stop to check for traffic and entered the roadway from behind a thick tree line. Porter was unable to see the horse and buggy and struck the horse, sending the buggy airborn and ejecting the children. The kids were transported to Houlton Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The horse was killed. The crash remains under investigation.
