It was around 11:30 on Tuesday night that a noise complaint call came from the Presque Isle Inn and Convention Center.
“I looked out the window and saw a firework go off, and then upon investigating, I determined that it was coming from a room,” said Robb Miller, Operations Manager at the PI Inn and Convention Center.
The noise was coming from the room of Michael Mielnicki, he is a K-9 handler with the Border Patrol. As police arrived, they heard ranting, fireworks and explosions coming from Mielnicki’s room.
“Ultimately made contact with the man that was in the room, he was somewhat combative with the officers and they had to subdue him and handcuff him,” said Presque Isle Police Chief Matt Irwin.
Mielnicki faces a number of charges including refusing to submit to Arrest or Detention, Criminal Mischief, and possession of a usable amount of Marijuana. He’s also been charged with Animal Cruelty. He was off duty at the time but being a K-9 handler he had the dog in the room with him. The dog was not injured but Police say he was quite frazzled by the noise.
“The explosions from the fireworks and so forth had apparently put the dog into a pretty tenuous state in terms of it being very excited and scared and so forth,” said Chief Irwin.
The Border Patrol has released a statement in regards to Mielnicki. They said,”We do not tolerate corruption or abuse within our ranks, and we fully cooperate with any criminal or administrative investigations of alleged misconduct by any of our personnel, on or off duty.”
Mielnicki was taken to Aroostook County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court on January 22nd of next year.
