A 21 year old Augusta woman has been arrested and charged with arson. The charge stems from an intentionally set fire at 30 North St. in Augusta Thursday night at 7:53 PM. The property is a multi-unit rooming house with about 15 units. At the time of the fire, 12 of the units were occupied with about 15 residents. Arrested and charged with arson is Christina Karod who lives a room on the third floor. Karod was arrested about 11:30 last night and taken to the Kennebec County Jail. She was being held in lieu of $2,500 bail and with stipulations that she cannot return to the property.
Fire Marshal Sgt. Ken Grimes said Karod set fire to several books in a reading area and to a curtain on an exit door –both on the second floor. The fire caused minimal damage. A fire alarm system was activated and all residents were evacuated without injury.
Arson is a class A crime in Maine. An initial court appearance was scheduled for today if bail was not made. Fire Marshals were assisted at the scene by the Augusta Fire Department.
