Local businesses are at the heart of our local communities. Some have been around longer than others. And as News Source 8’s Angela Christoforos reports, this weekend a business owner in Ashland was recognized for 50 years of service…

Jim Collier walked in to his business to applause and hugs from family…

“It’s overwhelming,” said Collier, owner of Art’s Appliance and Furniture.

It’s part of a surprise. Recognizing Jim for 50 years of service to the Ashland community through his Art’s Appliance and Furniture business.

“It’s a lot of perseverance, you have to be on the job all the time, you have to take care of the customer, number one,” said Collier.

The funny thing is back in 1964, Jim had a job offer in Upstate New York, that didn’t end up panning out.

Art’s Appliance and Furniture Salesperson Kevin Charette said, “His father said Jim, why don’t you come home and help me for the summer, and he spent a lifetime he’s been here for 50 years.”

It all started with his father back in 1945. Through the years it’s expanded and a variety of things have been sold there, but these days Jim sells furniture and appliances.

Jim’s son Kris Collier said, “I’ve always been amazed with his work ethic, his perseverance, the store has been a part of our family.”

A family run operation that’s been a gem in the Ashland community.

” What’s it like working for your dad?”

” It’s a challenge… (LAUGHS)” said Kris Collier.

But as the old saying goes- the customer is always right.

” They’re loyal to us.. We want to be loyal to them,” said Jim Collier.

It’s what Jim’s strived to do the past 50 years and in years to come.

Jim Collier said, “It’s been a journey, there’s been ups and downs, but it’s been great. Thank you for all your past, your present, and your future business, thank you!”

Jim Collier is 70 years old, with no plans to retire soon.
