An update on the story we brought you last night about a suspicious fire in Presque Isle under investigation. A Presque Isle man is now in police custody…charged with arson. Shawn Cunningham has more.
Police say they now have the person responsible for Sunday night’s fire at 290 Skyway Street apt. 57-1 now deemed an arson in custody… 27 year old Travis McDonald.
“Evidence of the crime scene along with witnesses we were able to determine who started the fire,” says Ryan Eagles a Patrolman for the Presque Isle Police Department.
Officer Eagles says McDonald got word police were looking for him. He then turned himself into police Monday night. Eagles says the motive as to why McDonald would have set the fire remains unknown.
Officer Eagles says if convicted McDonald faces up to five years jailtime for the arson. But this isn’t the first time he’s had a run in with the law.
Eagles adds “he’s on bail for domestic violence assault.”
SC: “and for this…”
Eagles: “for this he’s charged with one count of arson along with violating conditions of release.”
Fire crews were able to contain the fire but clearly damage is done. The renter of the apartment made it out of the building safely. Eagles says the community’s help always makes a difference in solving many of these crimes.
“The community is a big part of what we do. We rely heavily on them their phone calls, their tips on various different crimes,” says Eagles.
McDonald is being held without bail at the Aroostook County Jail. He’ll make his first court appearance in Houlton Superior Court on Wednesday June 4th.
