It’s the final week of the “Just for Kids Playground” in Houlton. The Houlton Recreation Department has been involved in the day program for several decades.
Marie Carmichael Houlton Recreation Director says; “The “Just for Kids Program” has been in existence for over 50 years The kids come Monday through Thursday as early as 8:30 to 4 in the afternoon. Carmichael says that she thinks they are unique that no one else in the County runs a day program like this. It’s fun and they have great staff”
The wet weather this summer has forced the students to move inside the Recreation Center several times this year. Normally they are at the Just For Kids Playground in Community Park, but on wet days staff and youngsters stay busy indoors
Carmichael says, “We usually break them into groups. We use the gym for activities and downstairs for arts and crafts. We also have the game room, we kind of split them up and rotate them all around so that everybody gets to each of the spots.”
150 youngsters were signed up for the program that wraps up this week with a couple of major events on Wednesday and Thursday
Carmichael says; The children put on the parade themselves. They put on costumes ride bikes. We have our king and queen candidates from each age group and they parade down through town and we hand out our peanuts. On Thursday evening they set up all the Peanut Carnival games and that goes from 6-7:30, if its a beautiful night we will be outdoors on the tennis courts and if it rains we will be here inside at the rec.”
